Basic steps for upgrading source code from SDK 1 5 to 2 1 using Eclipse IDE

This is a step by step guide to upgrade one’s source code that was developed for an earlier version of android SDK, as is to work on a new version of SDK installed on your development environment

Pre-requisites:
1. You are using Eclipse IDE - Ganymede
2. You have installed SDK 2.1 on your machine
3. You have upgraded ADT to 0.96 on Eclipse IDE
4. You have pointed the Eclipse IDE to the new SDK 2.1
5. You have changed the default JDK compiler version on Eclipse to 1.6
6. You have created an Android Virtual Device (AVD) that uses the SDK 2.1 / Google API

NOTE: Upgrading SDK and Eclipse installations itself is provided in detail at http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html & http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html

For each project that you have in your eclipse workspace that was written for the earlier version of SDK, you need to do the following for basic upgrade (this does not include the upgrade of APIs that have be deprecated):

Step-by-step guide
1. Right click the project and go to Project Properties -> Android
2. You wil see tha right pane showing the ‘Project Build Target’
3. In this pane you will see either or both: ‘Android 2.1’ & ‘Google APIs’ depending on what you chose to install when upgrading your ADT to 0.96
4. Select Google ‘Android 2.1’ or ‘Google API” whichever is required by your earlier project (note you might have used only Android 1.5 for most projects. You would need Google API only for those projects that use google maps)
5. Then, go to the ‘Project’ menu and click on ‘clean’. Note, this is an optional step. You may have to do this if you get the error ‘Conversion to Dalvik format failed with error 1’.
6. Then, build the project by going to ‘Project’ -> ‘build’
7. You are done. You can now run the earlier Android application using the new SDK 2.1

More details about incoming Sense 5 5 update

The dust hasnt settled yet after the first worldwide HTC Sense 5.5 screenshots and here comes the another part of the fresh new details about newest HTC Sense UI. Have fun!

Lock-screen widgets - possibility to place one widget on the lock-screen. You need to swipe left to see the additional screen, where you can place of one these widgets: Gmail, Google+, Calendar, Google Keep (x2), Calculator, Music, Google Now and some widgets from 3rd party applications with support for lock-screen widgets, like Minimalistic Text or SoundHound

Possibility to use entire UI in landscape mode when device is inside car dock. Home screen, phone panel and basically everything else is working very well in landscape mode.

Possibility to use "Automatic brightness" and "Maximum brightness level" at the same time. This allows you to save some battery, because brightness max level can be limited.

Possibility to edit "Phone" panel. You can rearrange them or even remove unused tabs. This is rather small, but very nice improvement. You dont need to swipe 3 or 4 times any more to access particular tab.

New BlinkFeed settings panel, where you can select the exact content you want to view on your BlinkFeed screen. It seems that HTC really focused on their BlinkFeed child. Lets hope it will still be getting better and better!

Possibility to protect SMS backup with password. I believe that every "security" or "privacy" related update is important, even if most users wont probably use it.

"Stay awake" is finally back in Developer options in Settings. Taken away few months ago and desperately desired by users and developers.

Up to 6 (previously 5) home-screen panels including BlinkFeed screen. In my personal opinion 6 is weird number because this little thin line, also known as screen indicator can never be in the centre. This can be little confusing when using the device.

"Do not disturb" mode accessible via Quick Settings panel. Really great feature if you dont want to be waken up few times during the night!

More details coming soon!

5 Practical tips to save battery on Nexus 5

We know the new Nexus 5 and all the benefits it can offer. One of these features smarphone with so many running processes comes great demand for energy and also, as we already saw, the battery life of the Nexus 5 is far from being as good as you would expect from a phone of this type .

But through specific practices or tricks we can achieve energy savings and thus cause the battery on Nexus 5 is more durable. So, here are 5 tips that will help you save battery.

5 tips to save battery on Nexus 5

GPS

Many applications such as Google Maps, Facebook or Twitter are turning to GPS for our location. This means that the function is always enabled so you know our location at any time, assuming constant power consumption . Before, the only way to save energy spent to disable this feature, but now with Android 4.4 KitKat allows us the option to make an energy-saving mode.

This requires access to Settings> Location> Mode and select the option "Battery Saver" .

Notifications

Applications of our Nexus 5 and its associated services are a great battery consumption. These applications bring a permanent notification service "alertness" and therefore should configure each of these applications individually. However there are options that can help in this regard. For example, disable PUSH option for our mail. Therewith the new mail notifications do not occur when we, but the system update at certain intervals of time to see whats new, thus saving on device resources and turn into energy.

"Ok Google"

This new functionality included in Nexus 5 allows us to activate the phone when at rest by the phrase "Ok Google". This assumes that the device has activated all the time function that lets you hear this phrase. This logically implies an extra energy expenditure. If you think you can live without this feature can be disabled by accessing the  Google Now> Settings> Voice and unchecking the option "Ok Google . "

NFC

This technology is an unknown to most users, although not new and today lead many integrated devices market. It was conceived as a data transmission technology short-range and function led to the identification and validation of equipment or people. In Spain its use is practically zero, so for now we can do without this technology and thus save some battery . To disable it, you have to access Settings> Wireless & networks> Other Networks and disable "option NFC . "

Synchronization

Another way to save battery on  Nexus 5  is turn off synchronization . This option is not entirely appropriate, since in this way we will not date all our accounts and can be a hassle to enter each of them to see if there is anything new. Anyway this is subjective, and perhaps for others this is not a priority. If you are indifferent maintain synchronization of your applications can disable this option by accessing Settings> Accounts and unchecking those accounts that do not want to sync.
